Melt Design Filter for Hot Runner Injection Moulding Removes Melt Contaminants in Two Stages

Melt Design Inc., a manufacturer and global supplier of high-performance hot runner systems with a broad range of associated components, has added to its product line a dual-stage plastic-melt-filtering device designed to remove contaminants from the melt flow during injection moulding. The innovative device eliminates the need to clean out mould gates and saves further hours of production that might otherwise have been lost to material contamination.

The filtration unit is mounted between the extruder barrel and the moulding machine nozzle. Its unique design accommodates two separate melt pathways: one path during injection, where the melt is filtered in two stages and homogenized through a series of grooves and openings that steadily decrease in size, and another, separate path during decompression. The homogenization and mixing of the melt that takes place also is beneficial for imparting uniform colour and temperature distribution to the moulding plastic.

Decompression of hot runner moulds occurs with virtually zero pressure drop with the Melt Design device, making possible a faster, easier decompression cycle. In addition, during decompression, filtered-out debris is bypassed, and remains trapped and undisturbed, as the melt follows a different pathway. There are no springs or components in the filter to stick or clog, and the device can be routinely cleaned up, if necessary, through simple removal of the adapter and purging.
