UK-based contract manufacturer Europlaz has expanded its production capabilities with a 200,000 pound investment in additional cleanroom space at its Southminster, Essex site. The company has added 200 square metres of ISO Class 7 cleanroom area to meet the demands of a new medical device contract and to create additional capacity for future projects.

The expansion supports Europlaz’s broader growth strategy and forms part of a 4 million pound infrastructure programme aimed at scaling services and reinforcing its position within the medical technology sector. The new facility accommodates up to four injection moulding machines and dedicated assembly lines, all operating within ISO Class 7 conditions suitable for Class I, II, and III medical device production.

“This is a very timely development that allows us to grow with increasing customer volumes and, importantly, take advantage of more European and US clients looking to reshore projects from the Far East,” said Rory O’Keeffe, Commercial Director at Europlaz.

Two of the new injection moulding machines are already in operation, producing components for medical technology firm Olympus.

Cleanroom capacity supports compliance and flexibility

Cleanroom environments are critical in the manufacturing of medical devices, ensuring strict particulate and microbial control for product integrity and patient safety. Europlaz’s newly certified ISO Class 7 space supports both prototyping and high-volume production, enabling clients to scale rapidly for new product introductions and established product lines.

Among the first projects to utilise the expanded facility is Europlaz’s collaboration with Olympus, a global provider of optical and medical technologies. The company is producing components for the Endocuff Vision, a colonoscopy device designed to improve adenoma detection rates.

“This technology has the potential to significantly improve early detection of colorectal abnormalities,” the company said. “For every 1,000 patients screened, as many as 110 additional cases of adenomas may be identified using the device.”

The manufacturing process involves two-stage injection moulding for four different product variants, with components supplied to markets in the UK, EU and internationally.

Europlaz’s cleanroom facilities are ISO 13485-certified and support a wide range of medical technologies, including drug delivery systems, diagnostic devices, and wearable health products. Previous projects include the manufacture of a bio-artificial liver system, a breath-operated inhaler, and a compact dialysis machine for home use.

The company states that this expansion aligns with rising demand for qualified manufacturing partners amid reshoring trends, regulatory changes, and increased emphasis on patient-centric innovation.
