Mersen Development of fine-grain graphite makes surfaces shine
The supplier said it has been working on its surface finish graphite, focussing on the size of the grain.
Ultra-fine grain graphite offers a better surface finish and the possibility to machine fine electrodes with intricate details. Mersen said it understood quite early that the traditional way of producing graphite would not allow easily machinable ultra-fine grain graphite. After several years of research, a new process was developed involving new raw materials, thermal and mechanical processes, and a new ultra-fine grain graphite grade was born. The result was its Ellor DS4 grade.
On the one side the grain size of Ellor DS4 (4µm) combined with the ease of machining make it possible to produce very fine electrodes with thin walls or intricate details, the company said. On the other side, the exceptional EDM performance with a low wear of the electrode and high metal removal rate reportedly allows for the machining of fine details for aeronautic applications or sophisticated high-end moulds, with a high-quality surface finish.
The company noted that substantial successes have already been achieved with this new grade. Mersen has been present in South Korea for some time, and said the grade, along with others in its graphite range, have been in high demand at mould shops in a country enjoying vibrant growth in sectors such as automotive and consumer electronics.
