Software Delcam updates CAD data repair, repeats as leading CAM software supplier

Delcam said its latest release of PowerSHAPE CAD software due this month includes an upgrade of the Solid Doctor module for data repair, and the company recently earned a top rating as a CAM software supplier.

The improved module offers a comprehensive set of tools for the repair of CAD models from all sources, including IGES, STEP and native CATIA files, the supplier said, noting the software can tackle common problems in translating low-precision and incomplete data, including gaps and overlaps between surfaces, or duplicated and missing surfaces, and generate a valid, high-precision solid model.

Ian Watkins, development manager of PowerSHAPE, said: “Users will not see an immediate difference when they open the new version. Most of the changes have been in the background to make the automatic repair tools faster and even more robust. We have also made the recommendations clearer on the actions that need to be taken to solve the different types of problems.”

The software employs a combination of automatic data repair tools together with surface creation and editing options available from PowerSHAPE. This combination means that simple repairs can be carried out quickly and easily, while more complex problems can be overcome by deleting and replacing the existing surfaces within the model, the company said. The supplier provided the following explanation of the system: The first stage of Solid Doctor analyses the model to determine the extent of inconsistencies in topology or geometry. These errors are labelled on the model and divided into separate categories. For each category or class of inconsistency, the software recommends the most appropriate course of action, including a possible automatic fix.

The user then applies the automated repair sequence. Labels change from red to green as repaired, and those repairs can be inspected individually to check the results. The whole model can be re-evaluated to highlight further inconsistencies.

The second stage employs trim region editing tools to correct larger issues that require manual repair, such as mismatches between the edges of various surfaces within the model. These include direct editing options for the trim boundaries, which allow very quick and flexible adjustment of the surface edges to overcome errors in the model.

For more serious problems, the company suggests the generation of replacement surfaces in the affected area with its Smart Surfacing technology. The user simply deletes existing surfaces and sketches around the area to be repaired. The software analyses the boundary and suggests the most appropriate type of fill surface. Tangency can be maintained with the surrounding surfaces if required. Users unhappy with the software’s initial selection can run through alternative solutions.

Once the quality of the repaired surfaces meets requirements, they can be incorporated back into the solid model automatically.
