Even the best coating can't save a bad tool

In order to maintain an overview of the entire manufacturing process of a premium tool and to be able to coordinate the interaction of the various process steps even better, Cemecon is now working together with Anca, a manufacturer of CNC grinding machines, it says. Both companies are pursuing a holistic approach. Cemecon, for example, provides tool manufacturers with advice on the relevance of the geometry right from the start, so that an optimal coating result is available later on. And Anca recognised the importance of optimal tool preparation for the subsequent coating very early on. Because, as the team has learned, even the best coating in the world cannot turn an inferior tool into a bestseller. All components - substrate, geometry and coating - must therefore not only be of high quality, but also perfectly matched to each other. This is the only way to create an outstanding precision tool with which machinists can achieve top performance.

Furthermore, the companies represent the same values: with a high vertical range of manufacture in their own production, Cemecon and Anca ensure a very high level of quality. Thus, what was once a loose transfer of know-how has become a tangible cooperation. In May 2023, the management boards signed a promising, extended cooperation agreement and thus launched a joint development project.

Anca and Cemecon develop unsurpassed cutting tools

More precisely, in the joint development, the experts from Anca and Cemecon want to explore the potential of the Ultra technology in combination with the Steelcon coating. The new Ultra technology from Anca namely achieves a shape accuracy of less than ± 0.002 millimetres for any profile, including ball-end and corner radius cutters. This results in cutting tools with optimal surface quality as well as extremely high accuracy and concentricity, say the specialists at Anca.

The equation behind the project is quite simple, they say: take tools that are machined with such high precision and surface quality, add the appropriate coating material and combine the whole thing with the process know-how of both companies. With a cutting tool that has these attributes, users should be able to achieve cutting results that exceed all expectations, the partners believe.

For this purpose, the same tools were machined on standard machines and on ultra machines. This was to show which advantages arise with regard to the coating process and also the machining results. Is there a significant difference in tool life? Are more aggressive cutting strategies conceivable? What new possibilities are opening up? The experts from Cemecon and Anca are certain that their combined know-how and skills will open up enormous potential for tool manufacturers.
