Tooling specialist Big Daishowa announces two new lightweight angle heads: a version for tools with a diameter between 0.25 mm and 6 mm and a version optimised for high-torque threading. These new models complement the existing range, which is designed for general machining applications.

With a Big Daishowa angle head, users can expand the capabilities of their existing machines. The monobloc angle head programme enables complete machining of workpiece areas that are difficult to access without having to reclamp workpieces several times. This reduces production costs and increases flexibility in production without having to invest in new machines. This not only saves machining time, but also speeds up production processes.

Weighing less than 2 kg, the new angle heads are part of the compact series from Big Daishowa. Their reduced weight makes them compatible with the automatic tool changers (ATC) of small, dynamic machines such as those from Fanuc and Brother. This makes these machines even more versatile. The reduced weight allows the ATC to work faster, reduces tool change times and shortens overall cycle times resulting in significantly higher productivity.

The new angle heads have been specially developed for small machining centres with a BBT30 machine spindle and feature a high-precision BBT30 interface. The programme comprises three variants: for general machining, for high-torque tapping and for small bores.

Christian David, Sales Manager at Big Daishowa, comments: “These new models expand our range of angle heads and offer our customers greater choice and flexibility for milling, drilling, reaming and tapping. Brother's CNC machines, for example, which are often used in the mass production of small components such as valves and mechanical parts, benefit significantly from the reduced weight and the shorter tool changes increase productivity.”

The angle heads feature a compact design that minimises overhang and increases both rigidity and strength. A new design with non-contact seals offers even better protection against contamination from coolant and particles compared to conventional processes. In addition, the coolant is effectively channelled to the cutting edge and simultaneously cools the angle head, which helps to reduce noise and vibrations.

The lightweight series of these angle heads is manufactured from a high-alloy steel, including hardened and ground spiral bevel gears made from chrome-nickel steel with a high-precision angular contact ball bearing to ensure a higher transmittable torque.
