Hardinge has announced the release of the 80-mm Flex-C vulcanised collet system in which collet chucks mount directly to the machine spindle.

The collets can be inserted and removed with a manual compression wrench for changeover in less than 10 seconds, the supplier said.

The system is said to fall in the “special accuracy” classification with a guaranteed accuracy within 0.010 mm TIR for style A (pull-back dead-length stationary stop) and 0.020 mm TIR for style DL (push-to-close). These systems achieve the same gripping capability as conventional collets while using less draw-bar force.

Additionally, bar stock variations are no longer a hindrance, Hardinge said. The collet head has a gripping range of ± 0.5 mm of its nominal size to allow for variation in bar stock. Because there is no collet body, the collet segments will remain parallel to the stock even when there are variations in the bar stock.
