At METAV 2012 in Düsseldorf February 28 through March 3, the VDW Training Foundation is again hosting a special show for some 3,000 students and their teachers, intended to generate enthusiasm for pursuing careers in metalworking.
The show, under the motto “Mechanical Engineering—A Job with Power,” is giving the young people from North Rhine–Westphalia and Lower Saxony a hands-on look at the latest production technology. Invitations to the event went to technical vocational schools, specialized vocational schools and participants in technical courses at mainstream schools. The special show is presented in Hall 13 of the Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre.
“The shortage of trained personnel is becoming progressively more critical, particularly in mid-tier metalworking companies,” explains Peter Bole, director of the Training Foundation. This, he says, applies to the machine tool industry and to its customers in the mechanical engineering sector, both of which have a demand for trainees that cannot be met by the number of applicants for training positions.
Thus, Bole says, “Young people have excellent prospects in the metalworking sector.” They often don’t know much about careers in the field, however, which is the reason why 10 German partners are involved in “Mechanical Engineering—A Job with Power,” demonstrating how state-of-the-art machines and software are used in production operations. Trainees report on their everyday work experiences, instructors on their requirements, and representatives of universities and technical colleges on how to choose the right degree course and on advanced training options.
Participating in the special show are the DMG Training Academy (Bielefeld), Düsseldorf Technical College, the Community Teaching Workshop (Velbert), Heidenhain (Traunreut), Klingelnberg (Hückeswagen), Schütte Schleiftechnik (Cologne), Siemens (Erlangen), SolidCAM (Schramberg) and Dortmund Technical University.
