Makino is able to create complex and sophisticated material-handling cells to eliminate setups and prevent stack-up error. At IMTS in Chicago, Makino set up an Erowa ERC to shuttle both workpieces and electrodes between the EDNC 6 sinker EDM and v 33i 5-axis graphite vertical machining centre. According to Makino, this equipment is ideal for the low-volume, high-mix nature of die and mould applications, where automation helps shops achieve utilisation rates approaching 85%.
